I may or may not have let out a little squeal of excitement this morning when I went through my usual morning routine… hit snooze, hit snooze, decide it’s time to wake up, open up Instagram and… what’s this?!
Finally, after a staggered rollout, Instagram’s new business tools that they announced a month ago are here!
So what’s new?
A new business profile
The new business profile has two exciting additions – a contact button and location that gives directions.
One huge benefit of the new profile is you no longer need to try and include your email, phone number or city in your 150 character bio. This is something I’ve definitely struggled fitting into my profiles!
Potential customers no longer need to leave the app to find your details, it makes it easy for them to contact you, and find out straight away if you’re located in their city. It also gives you a push to include these important details on your profile if you’re not already – something a lot of wedding and pregnancy businesses forget to do.
Get analytics through Insights
While we love using Iconosquare for our Instagram insights, we’re pretty excited to get in-app analytics so we can quickly check how we’re tracking. Since we only swapped over the business profile today there’s not too much to see yet – but we will soon be able to view our top posts, impressions, reach and follower information – we’ll know more in a week and update you on how we’re going!
Promote your posts in-app
Until now we’ve had to create Instagram ads from Facebook’s Ads Manager or Power Editor. But not anymore. The Instagram Promotions tool lets your quickly and easily promote any Instagram posts you’ve already shared.
Once you’ve chosen which post you’d like to promote you can enter a link you want to send people to and choose one of 6 action buttons:
- Learn More
- Watch More
- Shop Now
- Book Now
- Contact Us
Next you can either let Instagram choose your audience for you, or create your own based on location, interests, age and gender. The interests are the same ones you’ll find when setting up Facebook advertising, since the two platforms are connected.
Then you set your budget (with a minimum of total budget of $2-$5 depending on your country), and length of your campaign. That’s it! It’s super easy, and you can see how your promotion is going in the app as well.
The potential bad news…
So while we’re really excited about these new additions we’re quite aware of the potential downside. This is just speculation of course, but swapping to a business profile could potentially decrease your reach. With Facebook buying out Instagram they are looking for more ways to monetise the app, and its possible our beloved platform will go the same way as Facebook; pushing businesses to spend on advertising to get the reach they need.
We have no doubt that Instagram will continue to be an amazing tool for your business. The ongoing changes being made just show the importance of having a content plan, being consistent with posting and engaging with your followers. The businesses that did this on Facebook when new algorithms and advertising were introduced still get huge reach because they’re seen as quality pages – our advice is to do the same with Instagram!
Keep posting regularly, post quality content and engage, engage, engage.
These new business tools make it even easier for you to connect with your audience and grow your business. While there may be a potential downside to letting Instagram know your profile belongs to a business, we think the benefits are too good to miss out on, and let’s face it… their algorithms will probably let them know without you telling them anyway.
Didn’t get the update?
You should get a notification at the top of your screen when you open Instagram. If not, try updating your app and check your settings. If you don’t have the option to switch to a business profile yet you should get it very soon!
